This 2-in-1 painting and sculpture stands as a raw, unfiltered testimony of love, loss, and the long road to healing.
At first glance, Catharsis captures attention with its imposing rustic presence, embossed with layers of textured depth that almost seem to breathe. Sculpted ridges, cracked edges, and roughened contours tell a story of something once whole, broken, and slowly made whole again. Shades of earthen umber, ash gray, rusted bronze, and deep blues swirl and clash across the surface, each tone embodying a wave of emotion: grief, confusion, numbness, and eventually, acceptance.
QN created Catharsis in the years following a deeply personal loss someone with whom she had shared a rare soul connection. In interviews, she described how this work emerged not from a desire to showcase her skill, but from a desperate need to release the grief buried in her hands and heart. As she sculpted and painted simultaneously, the piece took on a duality symbolizing both the shattered inner self and the exterior shell we show the world.
What makes Catharsis more than just an artwork is its capacity to mirror those who view it. The cracked textures resemble the fractured patterns of people loss, the layered pigments echo their emotional journey.
The central motif, an embedded, rough-cut abstract figure reaching out to another barely-formed silhouette, represents that moment we all carry... reaching for someone who is no longer there. But within the chaotic textures, there are veins of gold, hidden but present, representing solace found not in forgetting, but in remembering with peace.
